With over 28 years of combined encaustic experience, your instructors Cari Hernandez and Miles Conrad will lead you in an 8-day adventure to bring the beauty and culture of Bali alive in your unique encaustic creations. Learn the art of the encaustic medium with 5 full days of expert instruction including: Batik Meets Encaustic Monoprint, Look What You Found! a Day of Found-Object Encaustic Collage, Handmade Bali Books, Pods & Forms of Bali in Fiber, Traditional Bali Masks in Encaustics. This comprehensive workshop serves equally well as an introduction for beginners or a deepening of practice for experienced encaustic artists. Activities include a traditional Balinesian dinner feast, gamelan dance and music ceremony, with visits to local marketplaces, silk factories, rice paddies, temples, water gardens, beaches. Amenities include: single occupancy beach-front villas, breakfasts and dinners, snorkeling, yoga and massage. Workshop Itinerary
9/29/11 - Day 1: Arrive and Unwind
Students arrive in Bali.
A special Balinese dinner feast will be prepared to welcome students.
9/30/11 - Day 2: Guided Field Trip Fun- a day of exploration & collecting
Field trip to Ubud/ Silk Factory Trip
10/1/11 - Day 3: Batik Meets Monoprint
Wax Resist on Paper and Fabric: using woodblock, stencils, & stamping that focuses on Indigenous patterns to create works on paper
10/2/11 - Day 4: Look What You Found!
Found Object Assemblage focusing on embedding & composition, (making use of locally found objects, papers, & ephemera) brought together as shallow relief panel work
10/3/11 - Day 5: Bali Books
Handmade Encaustic Books created by paper folding, stitching, binding techniques, covers, brought together in a completed hand-made book
10/4/11 - Day 6: Pods & Forms of Bali in Fiber
Focusing on 3D fiber construction by means of patterning, cutting, stitching, creating structural reinforcement & specialized fusing techniques
10/5/11 - Day 7: Masked
Encaustic mask making using plaster cloth & wire to create a mask that will be dipped, carved, painted & fused in traditional motifs
Evening Party: a masked affair
10/6/11 - Day 8:Field trip to Amlapura Market and Tirtaganga Water Palace
Farewell Dinner for students…
10/7/11- Flights out of Bali
Other activities included in the workshop:
- A private one-hour massage
- An evening of Traditional Balinese Dance Performance
- An afternoon hike through the rice paddies along the river.
- Free access to snorkeling equipment.
